My husband got a raise at work that gives us a couple hundred extra a month. We agreed to pretend the raise didn't happen, so those extra funds would go straight into savings. Due to the rise in gas prices and other surprises, we have not been able to put that money away. I feel so powerless because everytime we are on the verge of being in a better position, the economy gets worse. How are you all doing it?
Update
Since so many feel compelled to shame me for my situation.. We do all the frugal things, share a car, cook my own meals, only one streaming service, switched insurance and phone plans, free/low cost activities at the library and outside. Shit, even vacations are just visiting family or camping at a state park. "Get a better job" The first sentence was literally that we got a raise. That IS an increase in income. I asked how all of you are staying afloat in hard times, not to pick apart my life and blame my choices when you don't even know me- let alone comprehend the question.
Thank you to those who shared their experiences, left encouragement and advice in a respectful way.
