What food do American usually eat for dinner?

I have a church group (mainly young adults). We gather for dinner and activities every week. Each of us takes turns to host. Since I am a foreigner, I am not sure what dinner the American people eat on a daily basis. Some friends suggested that I could cook the food from other countries, or what I am familiar with. I tried spring rolls, pho, and sushi, but nobody ate them at the potluck, so I guess maybe the people in our group are not food adventurers.

Cooking itself is not hard for me. The main barrier is the cultural background. I do know steaks, cheeseburgers, pasta, pizza, or some dishes like chicken pot pie, soup, or chill, but I am not sure if these foods are what people normally eat at home, what can be a main dish to serve alone, whether certain dishes are usually served together, and I also wonder if providing some food might show disrespect.

I did look up on YouTube, the videos usually teach certain recipes. If I know what I am going to cook, that's good, but I don't have any idea... Also, if I search dinner ideas in general, the search results would be some one-pot dishes for simplicity, which I am not sure if it is proper to invite friends in; or a quick dinner for one or two persons; or something like marry me chicken... I don't want to make people feel I am awkward, though.

Would really love to have some weekday dinner ideas, or where could I get the ideas? Thanks, and many loves!

PS: I live in Northern Virginia, not far from D.C., our group is mainly local or from a nearby state (PA, MD, NC, etc), and several are from the Midwest.
