Tony Scott's Music for Meditation

1 month ago 40

I've been meditating daily-ish for 20 years, and every day since January this year. I've tried a few styles mostly at the mindfulness end of the spectrum, and have settled for now on my own version of japa ("muttering") meditation; perhaps not too far away from TM. I find music and the more inane new-age-ish guided meditations to be an annoying distraction rather than a help so much prefer my mantra, said aloud to start and close my sessions.

Nearly 20 years ago I bought two CDs by Tony Scott - "Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys" and "Music for Zen Meditation". I've listened to these often, especially when working from home and writing something. They're close to free jazz on Tony Scott's clarinet accompanied with Indian or Japanese traditional instruments.

Until today, it never occurred to me to meditate while one of these was playing, but today I had the most extraordinary experience meditating while "Music for Yoga Meditation" was playing quietly. My breathing rate slowed away down and I became extremely relaxed yet alert; perhaps that state of mind and body we all hope for (but don't, of course, strive for). Perhaps it was beginner's luck (or beginner's mind!) and it won't happen again, but this morning's session was a notable experience.

Has anyone else tried meditating to Tony Scott's music? How did it work for you?
