Hi all,
I'm a former atheist, currently agnostic, who tries to practise secular Buddhism. I say try because I'm not consistent with meditation, but the intention is there 😊
I hold the Buddha in high regard as a teacher, but he allegedly made some supernatural claims, e.g. rebirth, other realms, supernatural powers, etc, which I find hard to accept. The suttas were written down a couple of hundred years later, so it's hard to know if he actually said these things or people 'embellished' his words down the line.
If he did in fact say them, I think it would've been because he was human and these beliefs were the products of the culture he grew up in. Or I am wrong in my worldview and he really did have insight into the nature of reality by accessing a level of consciousness that I haven't been able to access.
I'm curious if anyone here started out as a materialist/physicalist and their meditation practice changed their view about the nature of reality.
If so, what style of meditation do you practice?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts 🙏🏻
