Stop the Stops: Drivers are being delayed by construction crews

4 weeks ago 43

I live in Pompano, and for months now, I’ve been dealing with something I know many Floridians are seeing in their own neighborhoods too: construction companies overusing stop signs and flaggers — not for safety, but for convenience.

Here’s what I mean:

  • They stop traffic so worker shuttles can pull in/out without waiting like the rest of us.
  • They use flaggers to stop traffic so their trucks can exit, even if nothing is actively happening.
  • They halt drivers just to let workers jaywalk across busy roads outside of any crosswalk or signal.

Meanwhile, we’re the ones paying for these roads through our taxes. Many of these same companies are getting public tax breaks or incentives. So we’re subsidizing the delays, the fuel waste, and the frustration.

I’ve tried going through the proper channels: city, county, sheriff’s office, FDOT. Everyone shrugs it off or points to someone else. Nothing has changed.

So I started a petition calling for stricter regulations on when and how construction crews can control traffic on public roads.

📝 Here’s the petition if you want to sign or share: https://chng.it/gZ4rJnpzT2

My ask: If this kind of thing is happening in your area, leave a comment. I’m trying to build a record of how widespread this problem really is.

Thanks for letting me vent — and if you're sick of sitting in unnecessary traffic, I hope you'll help push for some accountability.
