i was planning a proper new build, ryzen 7 9700x + b850 board the whole thing. but then i stumbled on this Z640 locally for $85 with dual Xeon E5-2680 v4s and 64gb of ECC RAM already in it and just went for it on a whim.
threw in a RX 6700 XT i picked up used for $160 and the thing just works. like really well. 1080p gaming is totally fine, heavy multitasking doesn't even phase it, and the ECC ram situation is kinda cool to have even if i'll never actually need it.
obviously there are tradeoffs, single core performance isn't gonna win any awards and the platform is super old. but for what i actually do (gaming, some light video editing, lots of chrome tabs lol) i can't feel a difference from my buddy's 9600x build.
the part that messes with me is now i feel weird pulling the trigger on a new build. like the performance gap for my use case just isn't there the way i expected it to be.
