Air Conditioning in Miami

Hey, thinking of renting a unit near the beach. It's an older building with just a few floors and the air conditioning units installed through walls on each room. Obvious question . . .So these units work well? I grew up with central air and it seems these systems would be a noisy headache. Please educate me.
