If you haven't seen the local lawn signs, there’s a group of Boca residents trying to stop the city from leasing or selling a big chunk of public land downtown: parks, tennis courts, a skate park, softball fields, the Boca Museum of Art & Boca Raton Historical Society, and more. The city wants to hand over the land to private developers for 99 years to build a new city hall, hotel, retail space, office towers, and roughly 1,000 residential units. Obviously, lots of upside. But always comes at a cost.
Save Boca is gathering signatures for two petitions. While it can impact all of Boca, it looks like only residents of the City of Boca can actually sign. The goal of the petition would force the city to get voter approval anytime they want to lease or sell public land over half an acre. Basically, they want residents to have a say before any more land gets handed off for private use.
The city argues this will bring in billions in revenue and actually add more green space overall, but opponents say it’s being rushed without enough transparency and could permanently change the character of the area.
The city is arguing as if they've already lost the vote, while the petition is simply to ensure residents have a say in what gets built. Seems okay to me, but what do you think?
