It’s time to speak up and demand fairness in our immigration system.

The Cuban Adjustment Act gives Cubans special immigration privileges that are not available to many others. Under this law, they can apply for permanent residency after just one year, even if they entered without proper documents.

They also receive government benefits like food stamps and cash assistance, while many who work hard and follow the rules do not get the same support.

To make matters worse, many of those who come under this law regularly send money and goods back to Cuba and even travel back soon after getting their legal status. That money strengthens the Cuban government, which taxes remittances and benefits from the flow of goods. In the end, this law helps keep the same regime in power that people claim to be fleeing.

This law was created during the Cold War for political exiles. Today, circumstances have changed and most people coming from Cuba do so for economic reasons. Because of that, this law no longer fits current realities and should be reconsidered.

As a U.S. citizen, I believe in equality. All immigrants should go through a fair and consistent process.

Call your senator and demand the repeal of the Cuban Adjustment Act. It’s time to treat everyone fairly.
