FIU is trying to renege on their faculty union contract

5 hours ago 4

FIU claims they don’t have enough money to pay faculty the measly 2% retention raise and conditional 1.5% merit raise they agreed to in the union contract just 12 months ago, despite substantial increases in both state funding and enrollment.

The administration is actually doing some creative accounting to move money away from employee compensation, so the money can go into their budget “carry forward” slush fund, which largely subsidizes construction projects that aren’t funded by the state.

In typical Miami fashion, the administration wants to build more shiny buildings instead of paying the workers who are actually educating students.
