I'm not generalizing everyone; I'm just going by "averages". Having been in some rust belt cities, and then coming back to South FL, I noticed a huge difference.
I feel like South FL is a tad too superficial for my tastes, but I'm more superficial than the midwest.
In South FL, sometimes it seems like some people view life as a checklist of attributes: career, income, car, weight, looks, etc. And there's underlying mentality of "what are you doing to boost the scores on your life report card"?
But in the midwest, I've seen many people (who have money - they are not poor), but don't care if their car is dirty, the house is a bit cluttered, or if there's trash in the backyard. Or if the paintjob in the house is horrendous.
In Florida, I'd feel mortified to bring a date home to that. There would probably be no 2nd date. But in the midwest people don't seem to care as much.
I realized I'm in the middle ground when it comes to superficiality. Like with clothing for example. I don't care about brands or expensive clothes. But I do value color coordination, getting the fit right, picking clothes that pair well together, etc.
