How are the waves for kiddos?

I'm thinking about bringing my family with two little ones (pre-kindergarten) to Pompano in April. This would be the first experience of the ocean for the kiddos and I'm wondering if the waves are typically too rough for kiddos unfamiliar with the ocean.
