Host Summer Job in Fort Lauderdale?

I'm completely new to the restaurant industry and looking for summer employment. I've heard Host is where newbies start, but I want to become a server eventually. I'm an out-of-state college student who lives in Fort Lauderdale during breaks, and I have already submitted half a dozen applications. I only heard back from one and didn't get the position after the first interview. Any suggestions from those in the industry?
