Yes, Flea is a machine. Matt Freeman is a beast. Lemmy was a formidable presence. I love Jaco and feel bad for him.
The list goes on, but two guitarist friends got me thinking. They're obsessed with "heroes", copying their gear, their tone, their technique, following their life events.
Even on forums, people seem to want to mimic celebrities, using them as constant references.
We can all be proficient, creative, we can all come up with great music, tones, and our own playing. Those "idols" we have might be great, but they're not an obligatory yardstick.
I raise my coffee to all those who don't really care about famous bassists - though we still enjoy their music.
