Conflicting info about private property iguana control

9 months ago 25

Hi all, my home (in Coral Springs) has lots of iguanas causing property damage (such as land erosion).

The police department told me it is legal to humanely neutralize iguanas on my property by delivering a high-velocity air rifle pellet to the iguana's head- this is corroborated by the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission on their website. Curiously, the Coral Springs Humane Unit explicitly told my neighbor that Coral Springs does not allow people to kill, trap or transport iguanas.

I looked up the General Ordinance Code of Coral Springs, where I found the following regarding reptiles:

Sec. 4-19. - Trapping of any animal, reptile or fowl.

(a)Trapping of any animal, reptile, or fowl shall be prohibited by any person not in possession of a Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission Trapping permit.(

b)No person shall transport or relocate any trapped Florida native wildlife animal to any other location without property owner written permission and a Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission Transport permit.

(c)No person shall relocate any animal, reptile, or fowl not native to Florida.

(d)No person shall set any inhumane trap for the purpose of capturing any animal, reptile, or fowl on any public or private property.

(e)No person shall dispose of any trapped or confined animal, reptile, or fowl in an inhumane manner.

(f)No person shall set a trap in any area that may pose a threat to the life and well-being of target animal. Threat shall mean, but not [be] limited to, setting near any waterway or pool without securely staking the trap to the ground to prevent death by drowning or setting on a roof top exposing the animal to extreme temperature or weather conditions. Any trap found in violation of this subsection will be confiscated as contraband.

(Ord. No. 98-130, § 2, 11-17-98)

I want to do right by the iguana (an incredibly invasive and destructive species) by humanely and quickly neutralizing them with ideally no suffering, and I also would like to do it by the letter of the law. I'm just not sure what that is at the moment.

Any thoughts?

UPDATE 7/1/2024: Per the Coral Springs Code of Ordinances, a property owner cannot legally kill nuisance animals.

Sec. 4-3. - Prohibited hunting. It shall be illegal to engage in any form of hunting within the city limits by means of firearms, bow and arrow, slingshot, or any other means for the purpose of killing or injuring any bird, animal, or reptile.

(Ord. No. 98-130, § 2, 11-17-98)
